Baseball Team Meeting.

Castiel has had a new opportunity to make signs, and multicolored flyers have gone up all over the bar.

There will be a Team Meeting
for those playing with Castiel
on the baseball diamond, beginning at 4 o’clock

On the appointed day, he sets up his meeting at the baseball diamond. Castiel has witnessed meetings like this before. And he has prepared accordingly.

A beverage called Kool Aid seems to be popular, so Castiel has provided three large pitchers’ worth—one red, one purple, one green—along with paper cups. And several boxes worth of cookies. Some upended crates from the building supplies serve as makeshift tables. There is also a selection of bats and a bucket of balls laid out by the bleachers, and extra copies of the rule book Meg has compiled.

Castiel—as ever, in his trench coat--stands a little apart, hands clasped behind his back. He’s not quite sure what to say. Addressing assemblies has never really been a part of his job description.

He clears his throat.

“Hello,” he says. “Welcome to the team meeting.”

So far, so good.

“The purpose of this meeting is to become acquainted, so that we may go forth into the game with a sense of camraderie. This way we may talk, and, if we wish, practice together.”

Castiel nods deicisively.

Clearly, the celestial chain of command is not good at delivering the warm, fuzzy speeches. But it’s a start.

"How is it that you learn?" Teja asks. "In what weapons and disciplines are you trained, apart from wielding a katana?"

"They try to teach us some of everything. Most of what we learn is guns, unarmed, and swords, but anything can turn up in a Game, so we have to be ready."

"Have you ever wielded a battle-axe?" Teja asks. "Naginata? Bow and arrows?"

[a1enzo]

"Not the nagi-whatsit. And we haven't used any really big axes."

[ostro_goth]

"The naginata is a weapon from the lands of Japan, which you might call a battle-scythe, judging from the way you wield it," Teja says. "I have seen it there, and become interested in he concept. It is lighter than my axe, and has a longer reach, but does not have the same momentum, as the blade is lighter than the head of a battle-axe."

"So..." Enzo tries to envision this. "Kind of a polearm?"

"Indeed," Teja says. "A long pole, with a long blade on the end; I hear that in the olden times, one would often re-use broken or chipped sword-blades for that."

[a1enzo]

"Oh. Sounds like a good idea. We've done some polearms, just not that one."

[ostro_goth]

"I think a naginata is a very good idea, and a clever invention, of those people of Japan," Teja says.

[a1enzo]

"Japan. That's where sushi comes from, right?"

Yup, that's about the breadth of his knowledge.

[ostro_goth]

"And the katana," Teja says.

[a1enzo]

"Ohhhh. Cool."

[ostro_goth]

"Where did you think a katana was from?" Teja asks.

[a1enzo]

"On Earth? I dunno, I don't know a lot about countries."

[ostro_goth]

"Do you not learn about that in the classes you take?" Teja asks. "One needs to know about terrain, to fight!"

[a1enzo]

"We don't have countries in cyberspace. We have systems."

[ostro_goth]

"But your users are human, are they not?" Teja says. "And they live in countries!"

[a1enzo]

"Yes, but we can't see outside the 'Net. I never heard of countries 'til I came here."

[ostro_goth]

"Is not all information in the world stored in computers?" Teja asks.

[a1enzo]

"We are the information. We don't... know what we mean to you."

[ostro_goth]

"So you know not what it is that you contain?" Teja asks.

He finds it strange.

[a1enzo]

"Yes and no. I guess. We know what we are. But everything looks different from the outside. We don't see what you see on the screen, and you don't see the city. You know?"

[ostro_goth]

"I never worked with a computer, so I know not what a user would see," Teja says. "The purple godling writes words on a board of letters, when he works at his."

[a1enzo]

"Right, a keyboard. That's a peripheral, that means it's... something you connect to the computer to tell it what to do. Or something the computer can tell what to do, like a printer."

Teja shakes his head. "No, it is part of the computer; it is the lower part, when he opens it."
