Baseball Team Meeting.

Castiel has had a new opportunity to make signs, and multicolored flyers have gone up all over the bar.

There will be a Team Meeting
for those playing with Castiel
on the baseball diamond, beginning at 4 o’clock

On the appointed day, he sets up his meeting at the baseball diamond. Castiel has witnessed meetings like this before. And he has prepared accordingly.

A beverage called Kool Aid seems to be popular, so Castiel has provided three large pitchers’ worth—one red, one purple, one green—along with paper cups. And several boxes worth of cookies. Some upended crates from the building supplies serve as makeshift tables. There is also a selection of bats and a bucket of balls laid out by the bleachers, and extra copies of the rule book Meg has compiled.

Castiel—as ever, in his trench coat--stands a little apart, hands clasped behind his back. He’s not quite sure what to say. Addressing assemblies has never really been a part of his job description.

He clears his throat.

“Hello,” he says. “Welcome to the team meeting.”

So far, so good.

“The purpose of this meeting is to become acquainted, so that we may go forth into the game with a sense of camraderie. This way we may talk, and, if we wish, practice together.”

Castiel nods deicisively.

Clearly, the celestial chain of command is not good at delivering the warm, fuzzy speeches. But it’s a start.

"You have learned that very fast," Teja says, when she does.

"I have been well-trained," she says, returning the bat to the pile Castiel provided.

"Physical things are not difficult."

Among other things.

Social graces and abstract thinking outside of combat, however, are still tricky.

"What have you been trained at?" Teja asks.

"Combat," X says, matter-of-factly.

"I am good at killing people."

This is not a lie.

"So am I," Teja says. "It seems a good fighter may make a good baseball player, and the other way around."

[cutting_edgex23]

X looks a little dubious.

"I do not think baseball players are good at hurting other people."

Most of the time, anyway.

"It is not their job."

[ostro_goth]

"They do similar things without hurting people," Teja says, "or rather, hurting them only symbolically."

[cutting_edgex23]

"It is still not the same."

Beat.

"For them."

But that is okay.

[ostro_goth]

"No," Teja says. "Most men would prefer a baseball game to a battle, one may assume."

"Now," X says. "Yes."

It still does not make sense to her.

Oh well.

"I will fight and kill when I have to," Teja says, "but I would not seek battle for a cause not my own. Unless it was on the battlefield world; but that is different."

X frowns.

"The battlefield world?"

This she has not heard of.

"I do not understand."

[ostro_goth]

"There were doors in the bar, red and blue, leading there;" Teja says. "One would join the RED or the BLU army, and fight the other. It was loud, bloody, and full of explosions, but nobody died; one was put together again by the magic of the place, and sent out to fight again, starting from the base. I had a rocket launcher; it was exhilarating."

"Oh."

X looks more than a little startled.

"That does not make sense."

It is, however, something she will remember.

But what was the point?

"It did not make sense at all," Teja says. "But it was not needed. It was a battlefield world, where battle was done for the sake of it."

"But you left."

Her expression remains blank, with a slight hint of confusion.

Sometimes this happens.

[ostro_goth]

"After a number of attempts, I was brought back here," Teja says. "If it would never stop, things would get boring. Of course, it would have been better had we won, and then gone back."

She tilts her head a little at that, curious.

"There was an objective? Besides fighting."

[ostro_goth]

"We were to push a cart full of explosives into their base, and they were trying to stop us," Teja says.

[cutting_edgex23]

"Oh."

It makes sense to X. Somewhat.

And the overall strategy is not her business.

"That is very different from baseball."

[ostro_goth]

"Not the part where they tried to keep us from getting there," Teja says. "Of course, they had firearms for that, and nobody demanded they hold a ball.

"That would not have been useful in combat," X says.

She's talking about carrying around a ball.

[ostro_goth]

"Indeed not," Teja says. "The ball does symbolise a weapon, though, I would say, for only the one that is armed with it may attack."
